Recruiting News – David Hicks Commitment to Texas A&M

Post by Matt Meyer, Sports Morning and College Football Coverage Producer @bluto51 on Twitter

Folks, folks, can I please have your attention?

Yes you, all riled up because some high school football player you’ve only seen highlights of and probably don’t know personally had the audacity to not commit to Oklahoma. Take a deep breath. For your sanity and mine.

I don’t know if David Hicks Jr. is going to be Reggie White or a complete bust. Guess what? You don’t either. Nobody does. Coaches recruiting him don’t. Hicks himself doesn’t. I wish nothing but the best for him and I hope he makes the right decision. Here’s the thing about that decision, though…

He hasn’t made it.

But Matt, he committed to Texas A&M yesterday! Those darn Aggies bought another player!

May I just remind you, he gave a verbal commitment. He has not signed a binding letter of intent yet. Think there’s ever been a high school kid change his or her mind? Sounds like Hicks himself has, as most thought he was going to commit to Oklahoma.

If you are someone who’s down in the dumps because of this, please, step back into reality. I hope the best for him and you should too. Of course you want your team to get the best players, but that can’t be judged for a few years anyway.

I’m not one that says recruiting rankings are complete garbage, but I do believe you have to look at them on a macro level, not a micro level. Meaning, the teams that are consistently playing in the playoffs are usually the teams that are finishing high in the recruiting rankings. However, nobody knows if this kid is really the best defensive lineman in the country, or the 3rd best, or the 10th best, let alone how good he’ll be in college. There’s plenty of examples of five star kids that become Hall of Famers. There’s plenty of examples of kids that aren’t highly rated becoming the same thing.

Now, if you’re one who’s sending David Hicks hurtful messages on social media that you would never say to his face, or even if you would, quit announcing to the world that you’re a moron. Chances are people around you know that anyway. I’m all for being a passionate fan. I’m not at all for being a lowlife.
