What a night. What a night for the NBA, what a night for the LeBron and WHAT A NIGHT FOR THE THUNDER!
Last night LeBron James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the all-time leading scorer in NBA history… and it all happened no other in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder- a game in which the Thunder won. The absolute best and funniest case scenario.
I will take a second here to give LeBron his flowers. To become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer really is an accomplishment that shouldn’t be overshadowed. Yes, one could say Kareem played four years of college and LeBron didn’t came right out of high school. Or one could also Kareem only made one (!!!) three pointer in his entire career. Or my favorite-this all happened in a game in which LeBron lost.
For my first two points I mention you could say “Tea Bag! Why are you such a LeBron hater?” Look- I think LeBron is the GOAT. But I have been a hater since I was four years old- I was a hater before it was cool. And I don’t plan on stopping soon. But for my last point: it’s not a hater move. It’s a straight fact. The NBA’s youngest team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, went into Staples Center (I refuse to call it Crypto.Com Arena) and won in what was the biggest spotlight game anyone on the team has ever played in.
I was literally laughing out loud to my roommate before the game thinking about how the Thunder have really been fed to the wolves by being thrown into a moment like this. I’m 23 years old, so I was putting myself in their shoes of what it would be like playing in a monumental moment like that. A-listers all along court-side, the cameras/ media/ LA/ LeBron/ National TV. The list can go on. I mean seriously, put yourself in their shoes for second and how nerve racking it must be.
For the Thunder to come out the way they did- completely unbothered- is THE most impressive thing I have seen from this young team. They were not fazed one moment of the big lights or the big moment. It was a beautiful thing to watch. It warms my heart knowing that this young core- even if no one’s talking about it- got to showcase their talent. People may not be talking about, but they saw. And they know.
Last night was a great night for basketball. It was. But it felt bigger if you’re a Thunder fan because we all got to watch history and watch this young squad win. Remember- all publicity is good publicity. For LeBron to do this against this Thunder squad on a national scale for all to see is awesome. Even if they lost, what a cool moment in history to say you were part of.
But they won!
One last thing- I want it mentioned that I called LeBron fake crying after he got his dog and pony show. Classic.
