Game Previews from The Animals

Gideon Hamilton/Anchor of WWLS’ Oklahoma State coverage: Football is back in Stillwater, but some new surroundings and challenges face Oklahoma State this year. One of those challenges arrives into town by way of a formidable FCS opponent. South Dakota State is looking to continue a 29-game winning streak that has established their program as the class of the teams not currently in the FBS. A loss would derail a promising season for the Cowboys out of the gate, but coaches and players are focused on their first opponent and not taking them lightly. That’s a good sign, but they’ll still have to play well to win.

“The Legend” Al Eschbach: It’s a new season and a new era. That’s what Oklahoma State faces as they open their 2024 football campaign this weekend. Oklahoma State fans get to see their Pokes entertain South Dakota State on Saturday. The Cowboys are excited about the new look Big 12 Conference. Mike Gundy’s veteran-laden team is No. 17 in the AP poll.

Matt Meyer/Gameday Producer: Optimism for the Oklahoma State football program is as high as it’s been in a long time, and for good reason as the Cowboys return the vast majority of their team from a 10 win campaign and an appearance in the Big 12 Championship game a season ago. That optimism has been demonstrated by every ticket for a Cowboys home game being sold before the season starts, a first for the OSU program. All American RB Ollie Gordon II returns along with veteran QB Alan Bowman, WR’s Brennan Presley and Rashod Owens, and the entire offensive line, a unit that has as much experience as we’ve ever seen in college football. Nine starters return on defense including LB’s Collin Oliver and Nick Martin, but the experience needs to pay off in production as OSU struggled on that side of the ball a season ago. Hopefully, Oliver will be asked to rush the QB more this fall as Bryan Nardo begins his second season as the defensive coordinator in Stillwater. The offense looks loaded but the defense needs to be better if the Cowboys want to make it to the Big 12 Title game for the third time in four years and establish themselves as the premiere program in the reconfigured conference. The Pokes begin the season hosting South Dakota State, the two time defending FCS national champions, who went a perfect 15-0 in 2023. Many people think that this game could be a tricky way for OSU to open their season, and while I don’t think it’ll be a walk in the park, I like the Cowboys to win comfortably. I doubt that many of the Jackrabbits could start at OSU and most on the SDSU roster would not have merited any attention from Cowboy coaches in recruiting. South Dakota State has a terrific program, but Oklahoma State is a different level of team and has a different level of athlete than what SDSU is used to seeing. Cowboys 31 Jackrabbits 17.
